"As an international Student, how can I get work once I graduate?"

In this article I want to give advice to international students and new-Australians looking for employment in the professional world. In my team I have several employees who are new to Australia and have spoken with them about the difficulty they found in the Australian labour market.

So, if you're an international student or a new-Australian, here's some of the common mistakes made and how to fix them.

Presentation of your cover-letter and resume.

When you send in your CV and cover letter, HR will get approximately 25-50 resumes. Only 10% of those resumes will make it to my desk as HR short lists the most promising candidates. Research shows that to make sure yours isn't one of the resumes that gets rejected in the first round, you should pay careful attention to formatting.

I recommend you use your Universities or TAFEs free career advice center and get them to review your resume and cover letter before you send it off to an employer.

Language

Likewise, get a native English speaker to review your resume for spelling and grammar mistakes. It's sad that some employers have a bias against non-native English speakers, but to over-come this, get someone to review your resume and cover-letter so you can get a face-to-face interview and sell your skills in person.

The face-to-face interview

Ask your TAFE or Uni's Career Advisers if they wouldn't mind role-playing interview questions with you and then get feedback on your responses. One of my employees found this very helpful.

Sell yourself

A lot of CVs I read from international students come across as very humble. Don't be afraid to tell a potential employer about your skills and times where you felt you did really well at Uni/TAFE or in a previous job.

Confidence

If you show your employer that you believe you will be good at the job, they will believe it too.

References

If you did well at a course at University or TAFE, ask for a reference from the lecturer. It will really help boost your resume.

Research

In your resume and at the interview, show the interviewer that you have read the website and know a lot about what the company does. Questions like "I saw on your website you also provide "x" service, will my job entail anything to do with that?" show your interviewer you're proactive and interested.
